The Creation Story
Co-Creator: Sheree Commerford
Skill: Professional sun lizard and water worshipper. Also a dedicated swimsuit enthusiast.
Ethos: Make life as simple and stylish as possible while actioning sustainable practices to the best of your ability.
The Idea: As a result of the Covid lockdown I started working out at home and then hitting the ocean for a swim. I wanted the transition from workout to water to be simple, fast and with no fuss so would either work out in my swim or swim in my workout wear. Neither option was ticking both boxes and I couldn’t find a sustainably made solution in the marketplace that had style AND function. The YC has all the elements I’ve been looking for in a swimsuit. Flattering, incredibly comfortable, a classic but unique design that is easy to wear, sustainably made, supportive, and suited to surfing, swimming, sunning, sweating, and sipping a cocktail.
Style Description
If you owned only one swimsuit what would it look like? What would it be made from? Where could you wear it? What if you are curvy or straight up and down? What if you are short or tall? What if you have a big bust or no bust? This thought process collides with the style inspiration of Gwenyth’s Talented Mr Ripley and the 70’s icons of Capri to create a shape that is classically cool with the ability to perform with function. From the shape of the neckline to the inclusion of a center back seam, all the design nuances have been considered to flatter but perform. The YC has a boy leg, a mid-low back, and a square neckline.
Sheree’s style tip: Don’t be afraid to make the most of your YC. An excellent travel companion I have taken the YC on many different adventures and worn her diving, sailing, sunbaking, and out to dinner as a bodysuit. Pack light but pack right is the T-Shirt slogan I’m selling and the YC is the all-around essential swimsuit for any wardrobe, any body, and any season.
Sizing & Details
True to size the YC is based on standard Australian sizing. The fabric has a special three-dimensional texture similar to a very small waffle. It is thick, strong, and dynamic. The unique textures create intriguing light and shadow effects that help shape and flatter the body while being incredibly comfortable.

Recycled
We searched high and low for a sustainable hygiene liner. Our sticker is a coated transparent high gloss film produced from wood pulp (especially formulated to contain a high percentage of renewable materials).
The backing is white glassine paper (100% recyclable and 100% biodegradable). The adhesive is also non toxic, certified industrially compostable and made from a high proportion of renewable materials.
Carbon Click to offset emissions
In addition to making local and other considerations of materials, energy, and business output CANVS has partnered with Carbon Click to offset emissions that are difficult to reduce or are a blind spot in the business. Please see our ETHICS for more information.
The YC has been created with makers whom we share the same philosophy and have a close relationship. From our fabulous pattern maker in Newcastle to our swim make in Brisbane, we work with the best in the industry here in Australia.
The packaging for the project consists of 100% recycled eco-brown paper made in Sydney from 100% post-consumer waste.
This is secured with 100% carbon neutral manufactured stickers, printed with vegetable-based inks, and shipped all together in 80% recycled cardboard boxes locally produced using responsible forestry practices. We have opted to not used swing tags to save additional paper.
In the pursuit of a circular supply chain the goal was to find a fabric that was either recycled or could be recycled. The YC is made from Econyl, a specialised fabric made from recycled fishing nets that are regenerated together with other nylon waste and plastics.
The lining of the suit is also made from the recycling of discarded single use bottles using Repreve, an eco friendly fibre constructed with softness and comfort. You can find out more about ECONYL® regenerated Nylon from the Healthy Seas initiative here https://www.healthyseas.org. Image via @Econyl.
The Challenges
Finding a maker who specialised in swim that was willing to be transparent with their operation was challenging. Also not being able to source a locally made recycled swim fabric or alternative mean’t using fabric shipped from Italy to a distributor here in Australia increasing our carbon footprint. Even though we use carbon click to offset circumstances like this, we are hoping to improve on this.
